Looking after your skin while travelling
Its that time of year again when a vast majority of us are travelling to escape the cold winter (especially us folks in Canberra). Changes in climate, exposure to environmental factors, and a disrupted skincare routine can lead to dryness, breakouts, and other skin issues. To ensure that your skin stays healthy and radiant throughout your journey, it's crucial to adopt a travel-friendly skincare routine.
Below are our top tips to look after your skin when travelling:
Hydration
Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin, and this becomes even more important when traveling. Long flights, changing climates, and increased physical activity can lead to dehydration. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout your journey to keep your skin hydrated from within. Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it up whenever you have the chance, whether at airports, hotels, or tourist attractions.
SPF
Whether you're lounging on a tropical beach or exploring a bustling city, always protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with a high SPF. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that guards against both UVA and UVB rays. Don't forget to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas, including your face, neck, arms, and legs. Reapply every few hours, especially after swimming or excessive sweating (this is the step that most people skip). And please please wear a hat!!1
Skincare
Maintaining a proper routine is vital for healthy skin, even while traveling. Pack travel-sized versions of your cleanser, moisturizer, and other skincare products to ensure continuity in your skincare regimen. Ensure you are double cleansing to remove makeup, dirt, sweat and excess oil build up.
Most importantly, let your dermal clinician know where you are going as we can tweak your regime to suit the climate of where you are travelling and even based on the activities you will be doing. For example, if you will be out in the sun often we will add beta gel to your regime to increase hydration and skin immunity. Or if you will be in a area with high pollution we can give you products to help combat it.
Makeup
Opt for a mineral based makeup to avoid unwanted breakouts, Saint minerals BB cream has sunscreen AND skincare so you are treating your skin while still looking fabulous. A common mistake we see is clients using makeup that is comedogenic, thick and heavily fragrance, these will all negatively impact your skin that is going through a lot of changes trying to adjust to a new climate.
Treatments
There are a few small at home treatments that don’t take up a lot of time either! We recommend the Lira Pro anti aging pads twice a week to exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin. If your more a masque type of person there is a large selection from Biologique Recherche, including both sheet and cream based masques. Giving your skin that little bit of extra love will do a world of difference.
On the plane
We highly recommend you have the travel size of at least your cleanser and moisturiser. If you are on a long haul flight treat your skin the same, cleanse and moisturise before bed! If you are awake ensure you reapply moisturiser every 2-3 hours as we all know how drying the air is! Pack a lip balm, eye mask and ear pugs and try have a sleep as your skin heals when you sleep! It will thank you later.
