Poiklioderma
What is Poiklioderma?
Poiklioderma is a skin condition where a skin change with atrophy where hypopigmentation/hyperpigmentation changes and dilation of the fine blood vessels (telangiectasia) can be seen in the affected skin (source) . In other terms - it can be characterised by reddish and brown patches, initially appearing on the sides of the neck and under the chin - it can also migrate to the chest and sometimes the sides of the face .
Cause & Contributions:
Poiklioderma often takes years to manifests and stems from a combination of factors such as:
Prolonged sun exposure
Peri Menopause and Menopause
Low Estrogen
Fair skin
Genetic predisposition
Perfume & perfumed products
It often is asymptomatic however some clients report flushing, mild sensitivity in the area, and heat.
Treatments
Poiklioderma can be treated effectively when using correct skincare and treatments, the treatments we use here in clinic include laser and LED light therapy. The laser combines two wavelengths to target both the pigmentation and vascularity simultaneously, this leads to better clearance in a shorter amount of time.
We also encourage our clients to purchase a neck and decollate at home LED or to have in clinic LEDS to further aid their results - the LED helps with:
Cell repair
Boosts new cell growth
Enhances overall skin rejuvenation
If done before your treatment it also improves the effectiveness of the treatment through the reduction of inflammation and strengthening the skin.
Skincare
Skincare is important for the prevention of further damage and supporting the skin, specific products can be incredibly beneficial and it is encouraged to have in your regime. It should be noted that all serums and skincare must be put onto the area of concern to be effective.
