Persistent acne is rarely solved by a single product. At The Clinic Skin Health & Wellness in Campbell, Canberra, we treat the root causes of breakouts with a combination of clinical treatments and a tailored homecare plan, to calm active acne and help prevent future flare-ups.
What causes acne?
Acne develops when oil (sebum), dead skin cells and bacteria block the pores, triggering inflammation, but the drivers differ from person to person. In women, hormonal fluctuations (puberty, the menstrual cycle, PCOS) are common; in men, higher androgen activity, shaving and ingrown hairs, sweat and sports equipment, and stress are frequent triggers. Excess oil production, a disrupted skin barrier, certain skincare or makeup, diet, gut health and genetics all play a role too. Because the causes vary so widely, lasting results come from identifying your systemic and external drivers rather than following a generic routine.
How we treat acne at The Clinic
We take a holistic, progressive approach that combines in-clinic treatments with medical-grade homecare:
- Chemical peels to clear congestion, reduce oil and refine the skin's surface.
- LED light therapy to calm inflammation and target acne-causing bacteria.
- DMK enzyme therapy and clinical facials to decongest and rebalance the skin.
- Laser treatments to address inflammation and lingering post-acne redness.
- Skin needling for acne-prone skin, once breakouts are controlled, to refine texture.
Every plan begins with a thorough consultation and is paired with a simple, effective routine. Explore our acne skincare, or a clarifying option like the AlphaRet Clearing Serum.
What to expect & realistic timelines
Acne is managed, not cured overnight. Most people begin to see calmer, clearer skin within 6 to 12 weeks, with significant improvement over a course of treatments spaced every 2 to 4 weeks. Because skin cells turn over roughly every 28 days, consistency is essential, and we adjust your plan as your skin responds. Once clear, a maintenance routine keeps breakouts at bay.
A multidisciplinary team behind your skin
You are never treated in isolation. For severe, cystic or persistent acne, our integrative medical doctors and dermal clinicians work together to treat your skin from every angle, and if scarring later needs a procedure such as subcision, we have a plastic surgeon on our team. Our microbiome chemist can also formulate bespoke supplements to support your skin from within. It all begins with our 90-minute bespoke skin consultation, where we build a plan tailored specifically to you, and you will leave with a skin concern fact sheet and a meal plan developed to treat your skin from the inside out.
Frequently asked questions
Is my acne hormonal?
Possibly. Breakouts concentrated along the jaw, chin and neck, or that flare with your cycle, often have a hormonal component. We discuss this at your consultation and tailor treatment accordingly.
Will treatment make me break out first?
Some active treatments can cause a temporary purge as cell turnover speeds up. This usually settles within a few weeks, and we introduce actives gradually to minimise it.
Can I still wear makeup?
Yes. We will guide you toward non-comedogenic, skin-friendly options that will not undo your progress.
What about the marks left behind?
Once active acne is under control, we can address texture and scarring. See our acne scar treatments.
