Acne scarring, from rolling and boxcar scars to lingering marks, can be improved significantly with the right combination of treatments. At The Clinic Skin Health & Wellness in Campbell, Canberra, we use collagen-stimulating therapies to remodel the skin and smooth uneven texture over a tailored course of treatments.
What causes acne scarring?
Scarring occurs when inflammation from acne damages the deeper layers of the skin and disrupts normal collagen production. Atrophic scars (icepick, boxcar and rolling) sit below the surface as indentations, while raised scars are less common on the face. Separately, the flat red or brown marks left after a breakout are post-inflammatory pigmentation, not true scars, and these often fade with time and the right treatment. Picking or squeezing breakouts significantly increases the risk of permanent scarring, which is why treating active acne early matters.
How we treat acne scarring at The Clinic
Remodelling scar tissue takes time and a combination of modalities. Depending on your scar type we may use:
- Skin needling (microneedling) to stimulate collagen and progressively smooth indented scars, often enhanced with Rejuran, exosomes or PRF.
- Laser treatments to resurface and remodel scar tissue and even out tone.
- Chemical peels to refine surface texture and improve post-acne marks.
- PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) to harness your own growth factors for skin repair.
Supportive medical-grade homecare protects and enhances your results between sessions.
What to expect & realistic timelines
Scar revision is a gradual process. Because collagen remodelling continues for months after each treatment, most people need a course of 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with improvement building over 3 to 12 months. Indented scars are softened and refined rather than completely erased, and we are always honest about what is realistically achievable for your skin. Active acne is treated and controlled first, so we are not working against new breakouts.
A multidisciplinary team behind your skin
You are never treated in isolation. Our integrative medical doctors and dermal clinicians plan even deep or complex scarring together, and where a procedure such as subcision is needed to release tethered scars, we have a plastic surgeon on our team. Our microbiome chemist can also formulate bespoke supplements to support your skin from within. It all begins with our 90-minute bespoke skin consultation, where we build a plan tailored specifically to you, and you will leave with a skin concern fact sheet and a meal plan developed to treat your skin from the inside out.
Frequently asked questions
Can acne scars be removed completely?
True indented scars are improved and softened rather than fully erased. Most clients see a significant, lasting difference in smoothness and tone over a course of treatments.
Are red or brown marks the same as scars?
No. Flat marks are post-inflammatory pigmentation and usually fade over time, often faster with treatment. Indented or raised scars are textural and need collagen-remodelling therapies.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically a course of 3 to 6, tailored to your scar type and skin. We map this out at your assessment.
Is there downtime?
It depends on the treatment. Some cause a day or two of redness similar to mild sunburn; we will explain exactly what to expect beforehand and how to care for your skin afterwards.
